Characteristics of dyslexia

Dyslexia symptoms can be sometimes difficult to detect. However, some of them can be observed even before learning how to read, such as:

  • Delay in speech development
  • Difficulty in recognising letters
  • Difficulty learning new words
  • Difficulty understanding rhyming words
  • Pronunciation problems (confusing the order of letters in a word)

People with dyslexia may easily provide an answer to a question orally but encounter difficulties when they want to read or write. They may have poor phonological awareness and confuse letters.

These symptoms may make reading and writing slower when compared with others. It can have an impact on daily life.
